Audi Revives A2 Nameplate as Highly Efficient Electric Hatchback

Audi officially unveiled the compact electric hatchback A2 e-tron in Paris on September 7th, reviving the A2 nameplate after a gap of more than two decades. The new model is centered on high efficiency, long range, and compact dimensions, with the 140 kW version achieving a WLTP combined consumption figure of just 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometers when equipped with the optional efficiency package, which Audi claims is the lowest figure ever recorded for a production model in its lineup.

With a drag coefficient of 0.24, the A2 e-tron delivers a WLTP range of approximately 423 to 646 kilometers depending on the battery and powertrain configuration chosen. Orders are set to open in the German market on September 10th, with a starting price of €38,200. Production will take place at the Ingolstadt factory, and first customer deliveries are expected in December. In the UK, the starting price is £32,200, with orders scheduled to open in October and the first vehicles arriving at dealerships in early 2027.

As for a potential entry into the US market, Audi has not yet shared any plans. Audi CEO Gernot Döllner stated that the A2 e-tron is “not merely a new car” but also a key component of the brand’s broader product portfolio renewal.

Three Battery Options, Four Power Levels, All Rear-Wheel Drive

The A2 e-tron is built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB+ electric platform, sharing the same technical architecture as models like the Volkswagen ID.3. Three battery choices are available: a 52 kWh unit and a 61 kWh unit, both using lithium iron phosphate chemistry, alongside an 84 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt option. The electric motor lineup spans four outputs—125 kW, 140 kW, 170 kW, and 240 kW—and every version employs a rear-mounted motor with rear-wheel drive layout.

The entry-level variant pairs a 125 kW motor with the 52 kWh battery, offering a WLTP range of around 423 kilometers and a 0-100 km/h sprint time of roughly 8.8 seconds. The 140 kW version, equipped with the 61 kWh battery, achieves a range of about 515 kilometers and is the model Audi is highlighting for its efficiency credentials. With the optional efficiency package, its WLTP combined consumption drops to as low as 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometers.

The larger 84 kWh battery is paired with the 170 kW and 240 kW motors, delivering a WLTP range of approximately 629 to 646 kilometers. The most powerful version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in around 5.7 seconds. Since different markets and media reports vary slightly on which power output corresponds to the top 646-kilometer figure, Audi currently lists the official overall range as 423 to 646 kilometers.

DC Fast Charging Up to 183 kW, V2L and V2H Support Included

DC fast-charging capability on the A2 e-tron varies by battery size. The smaller battery variants support peak charging rates of about 100 to 105 kW, while the 84 kWh version can reach up to 183 kW. Depending on the configuration, recharging from 10% to 80% state of charge takes approximately 24 to 29 minutes. The vehicle also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, allowing the battery to power external electrical devices.

In select markets such as Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the new model additionally supports vehicle-to-home (V2H) operation through a DC wallbox, enabling the traction battery to function as part of a household energy storage system and supply power to a residence under certain conditions. This positioning extends the A2 e-tron beyond mere transportation, integrating it into Audi’s broader home energy management ecosystem.

Measuring 4.32 Meters Long with a 2.77-Meter Wheelbase

The new-generation A2 e-tron measures approximately 4.32 meters in length, 1.79 meters in width, and 1.55 meters in height, with a wheelbase of 2.77 meters—dimensions that are already significantly larger than the first-generation A2. Despite its compact-class positioning, the lengthy wheelbase provides generous interior space. Standard luggage capacity stands at 396 liters, expanding to 1,336 liters with the rear seats folded down.

Certain high-power versions also offer a front trunk of roughly 13 liters, suitable for storing items like charging cables. A panoramic glass roof spanning about 1.6 square meters is available as an option. The exterior design carries over some classic proportions from the original A2, including short overhangs, a taller body, and a rear section that tapers inward, while the overall styling and aerodynamic details have been modernized to suit a contemporary electric vehicle.

German Pricing Starts at €38,200, Top Trim Around €51,200

According to pricing announced for the German market, the entry-level 125 kW version with the 52 kWh battery starts at €38,200. The 61 kWh variant is priced from €41,900, the 170 kW version with the 84 kWh battery from €48,900, and the top-spec 240 kW model at approximately €51,200. In the UK, the starting price is £32,200. The new model may become eligible for the UK government’s electric vehicle grant; if approved, the price could theoretically drop by a further £1,500 or so, though this remains unconfirmed at present. Audi will release the full UK specification list before orders officially open.

Cabin Leans Further into Digitalization and Practicality

Standard equipment on the A2 e-tron includes emergency braking assist, lane-change assist, driver attention monitoring, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, and a reverse camera. Inside, an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster pairs with a 12.8-inch curved central touchscreen. The gear selector has been relocated to the steering column to free up space in the center console. A wireless charging pad supports simultaneous charging for two phones at up to 25 watts, complete with active cooling.

Audi has also integrated a Fidlock magnetic fastening system, allowing accessories such as cupholders and storage pouches to be attached, underscoring the emphasis on modularity and everyday convenience.

The A2 Nameplate Returns After More Than Two Decades

The first-generation Audi A2 was produced from 1999 to 2005, renowned for its aluminum body, lightweight construction, and high fuel efficiency, but it ultimately saw limited sales due to its elevated price and ahead-of-its-time market positioning. With the revival of the A2 name, Audi has not simply replicated the original model. The new car abandons the all-aluminum body and instead redefines “A2” as a compact electric vehicle focused on efficiency, space utilization, and urban commuting capability.

More importantly, the new model will be built in Ingolstadt, where Audi’s headquarters are located. The company stresses that this arrangement helps retain a greater share of electric vehicle manufacturing capacity within Germany. From a product standpoint, the A2 e-tron does not chase extreme performance targets but instead places its emphasis on striking a balance between energy consumption, range, space, and price. The low WLTP combined figure of 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometers stands as its most prominent selling point, signaling that Audi is repositioning “high efficiency” back at the core of its compact EV lineup.
