SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won is scheduled to visit an artificial intelligence data center under construction in Ulsan, a southeastern South Korean city, later this week, according to industry sources on Thursday.

The chairman is expected to tour the AI data center construction site at SK Group's facility within the Ulsan National Industrial Complex on Friday. Chey and his delegation are anticipated to inspect the worksite and review the project's progress.

The planned data center, dedicated to AI operations, is being developed in collaboration with Amazon.com, specifically its AWS division, with a total projected investment of 7 trillion won (approximately $5.2 billion). The groundbreaking ceremony for the project took place in August of last year, officially commencing construction, and the data center is slated to begin operations in the second half of 2027.

This facility will leverage graphics processing units (GPUs) to support high-performance computing and will be equipped with a hybrid cooling system, enabling enhanced performance and greater energy efficiency compared to conventional data centers.

SK Group intends to position this Ulsan data center as a hub to attract AI companies, generate employment opportunities, and drive innovation in the manufacturing sector, serving as a new growth engine for the industrial city.
