Japanese Producer Inflation Stays Elevated, Bolstering Case for BOJ Rate Increase

Japan's wholesale price growth in August came in hotter than expected, reinforcing the case for the central bank to push ahead with further monetary tightening to counter upside inflationary pressures. Data released by the Bank of Japan on Friday showed that the producer price index, which tracks the costs businesses pay for goods and services, rose 7.6% year-on-year in August.

While the pace of growth represented a slight moderation from July's upwardly revised 7.7% gain, which was the fastest since February 2023, it still exceeded the median economist forecast of 7.4%. On a monthly basis, producer prices dipped 0.2% in August, with the prior month's reading revised up to a 0.4% increase. Mirroring the trend seen in July, the latest uptick was primarily driven by higher costs for petroleum and coal products, chemicals, information and communication equipment, and non-ferrous metals.

The PPI report also underscored the ongoing pressure on manufacturers and service providers to pass on their rising input expenses to consumers, amid higher energy, transportation, and packaging costs, as well as wage increases stemming from a tightening labor market. Given these persistent price dynamics, market participants widely anticipate that the Bank of Japan will raise its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point to around 1.25% at its policy meeting on September 18.
