Blackstone Reportedly Set to Dramatically Expand Its Google TPU Procurement as AI Infrastructure Bets Intensify

The world's largest alternative asset manager is doubling down on Google's artificial intelligence silicon in a significant strategic pivot.

According to a report from The Information, Blackstone Group LP (NYSE: BX) is anticipated to procure a substantially higher volume of Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) than the scale revealed when it announced its joint venture with Google in May. A source familiar with the matter indicates that the additional procurement volume sought could be several times greater than the original plan, although Blackstone has declined to comment on the specific figures involved.

This development signals a potential major expansion of Blackstone's footprint in AI computing infrastructure. As one of the world's leading data center investors, Blackstone manages assets exceeding $1.3 trillion, with its investments in data centers and energy infrastructure forming a critical pillar of its broader bet on AI infrastructure demand.

Where the initial capital goes

In May, Blackstone and Google established a U.S.-based joint venture designed to deliver data center capacity, operations, networking, and access to Google Cloud TPUs, all offered through a "compute-as-a-service" model. At the time of the announcement, Blackstone committed to an initial equity investment of $5 billion, targeting 500 megawatts of data center capacity online by 2027, with plans for substantial further expansion after that milestone.

Reuters previously reported that the project could reach a total investment scale of up to $25 billion, including leveraged financing. For Google's part, the collaboration enables the tech giant to push its proprietary TPUs to customers beyond the confines of its own cloud platform.

Scaling up TPU commercialization

The timing of Blackstone's increased procurement coincides with Google's aggressive push to establish TPUs as a formidable alternative to Nvidia's GPUs in AI processing. A senior executive in Google's cloud division recently stated that the company's AI accelerator chip business is now twice the size of its nearest cloud computing competitor.

Starting this year, Google has begun including third-party TPU sales in its cloud segment revenue, deploying a multi-pronged commercialization strategy that encompasses leasing arrangements, direct sales, and the Blackstone joint venture.

Should the final procurement volume indeed multiply several-fold as reports suggest, the implications extend far beyond the immediate scope of this partnership. It would not only enlarge the TPU cloud joint venture but also underscore a growing conviction among large capital institutions that the "chip-plus-data center-plus-compute services" model represents the most dependable channel for sustained investment in AI infrastructure demand.
