Morgan Stanley: High Switching Costs Deter Automakers, Anticipates CATL's Market Share Growth

Morgan Stanley has released a research report stating that recent announcements by certain Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers to procure batteries from suppliers other than CATL (03750) have once again stirred market concerns regarding CATL's competitive edge. The investment bank notes that while past market attention has largely centered on BYD's (01211) DM-i platform and XPeng's (09868) transition to alternative battery sources, CATL's market share has continued to climb.

Morgan Stanley believes that CATL is poised to sustain and expand its market presence through relentless product innovation and performance enhancements. The firm has reiterated an "Overweight" rating on CATL's (300750.SZ) A-shares, with a target price of RMB 595, identifying it as one of its top picks.

The report highlights that automakers are discovering the opportunity cost of shifting to other suppliers is substantial. Moreover, CATL's brand recognition among consumers has grown significantly over the past five years, establishing it as a benchmark for quality among electric vehicle buyers. Morgan Stanley points out that reliability issues have become more pronounced among second-tier battery manufacturers over the last three years.

Although many carmakers are seeking to diversify their supplier base to reduce dependence on CATL, the actual outcomes appear to have fallen short of expectations. Several manufacturers have previously encountered quality-related challenges, including recalls, warranty costs, and damage to brand value, underscoring the significant opportunity cost of abandoning the industry leader.
