President Donald Trump posted on X on September 4, announcing that U.S. employers added 162,000 jobs in August, far exceeding market estimates. He wrote: "Great jobs number just announced, breaking all estimates (except mine!) by double and triple - And you haven’t seen anything yet!"
Trump then called on the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, arguing that "the U.S.A. is a much stronger credit than it was just a short time ago!" He stated: "A STRONG COUNTRY MEANS A LOWER INTEREST RATE - IT’S A BETTER CREDIT…Very simple!" He claimed the U.S. should have "the LOWEST RATE of any country in the World, like 'the old days.'"
Trump also threatened trade action: "LOWER THE RATE OR I’LL STOP TRADING WITH COUNTRIES WITH WHICH WE HAVE A DEFICIT." He cited a U.S. Supreme Court tariff decision that he said "strongly acknowledged 'the President' has an absolute right to do" such actions, adding that this approach "IS BETTER THAN TARIFFS!" He urged the Fed board to "get smart - BE PATRIOTS for a change" and warned that high interest rates put the U.S. at a "very unfair disadvantage" which he would not allow.
