Everpure puts dark data at 37% of enterprise information.\nThis creates a problem for companies that want AI systems to draw on internal records. Old files, duplicate copies and data with no clear owner can increase storage and security costs. They can also leave companies unsure which information to use.\nEverpure argues that companies should assess data according to its business value and risk. Information that has value and carries limited risk can be made available for AI projects. Records with little value but material security or compliance exposure should be secured, reduced or deleted.\nThe approach puts data retention alongside other decisions about the cost and control of AI. Companies must know which information they need, where it is held and whether they can rely on it before using it in an AI workflow.\nHowever, many organisations are finding that difficult. Everpure says 97% of organisations surveyed were struggling to move AI from pilot projects into production, with 62% reporting moderate to severe obstacles.\nData management was the leading challenge for 68% of IT leaders. Another 63% cite storage silos and data sprawl as significant barriers.\nThe findings reflect the difficulty of managing data held across cloud services, older systems and separate applications. AI tools may need access to records from several of those environments, while companies remain responsible for meeting their own security, privacy and compliance requirements.\n\"For most organisations, the enterprise data readiness gap remains an unmanaged risk because they lack the visibility needed to understand and close it. There is a massive opportunity to turn previously unknown and fragmented data into trusted, contextual intelligence that can support faster AI deployment, better decision-making, and greater business value,\" says  Simon Robinson, Chief Analyst at Omdia\nNathan Hall, VP & GM for APJ at Everpure, adds: \"Organisations across APJ are scaling AI at speed, but velocity without visibility is risky. Regional teams are managing a complex compliance landscape, rising security risks, and increased costs. The organisations that will be able to accelerate innovation are the ones that can answer three questions about any dataset: where it is, who is using it, and can I trust it.
