A model of the future greeted the Republican faithful at the GOP midterm convention right outside the American Airlines Center: A scale model of Shield AI's "X-BAT," a stealth fighter drone powered by artificial intelligence.
The advertisement comes amid deepening unease about the rise of AI generally and a grassroots revolt against the construction of the data centers that facilitate the technology. Champions of the tech have recently turned into critics, like GOP Texas Gov. Greg Abbott who said last month that AI companies "dug their own grave" and deserve "the backlash they deserve." Even as the White House champions the investment it brings, Vice President JD Vance has warned that, in some circumstances, AI can be "satanic."
