Staar Surgical is bringing back a former chief executive to run its commercial operations.

David Bailey is expected to rejoin the company as chief commercial officer, the maker of implantable lenses said Tuesday.

Bailey served as president and chief executive of Staar from 2001 to 2008. He was president of international operations for about three years after that.

During his tenure, he launched the commercialization of implantable collamer lenses in Asia. He also drove the development of the central port, which eliminates the need for a peripheral iridotomy laser procedure.

Bailey also raised more than $60 million and secured Food and Drug Administration approval for implantable lenses in 2005.

After leaving Staar, Bailey served as chief executive of Sensimed, a Swiss glaucoma diagnostics company. He also led Medicem's U.S. women's health business.
