Trump Pledges to Rescind 10% Tariff on Irish Whiskey

President Trump made a surprise trade announcement at the Irish Open golf tournament on Sunday, saying ahead of the trophy ceremony that he plans to rescind the U.S.'s 10% tariff on Irish whiskey.

"Everybody's been bugging me about this one thing: 'Would you do me a favor? It's so unfair what's going on. Could you possibly take the tariffs off of Irish whiskey?'" Trump said before handing the trophy to Shane Lowry. Trump said Lowry talked to him about it, as did Micheál Martin, Ireland's taoiseach, or prime minister.

Trump ended his speech by announcing, "on behalf of the United States of America, I am going to take the tariffs off of Irish whiskey." The crowd gathered at the Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg for the trophy presentation whistled and cheered at the news.

Most imports from the European Union face a 10% tariff. That was reduced from 15% in July.

The Trump administration's tariff threats, implementation and removal have upended global trade of items ranging from whiskey and wine to car parts and appliances. The U.S. removed its tariff on Scotch whisky over the summer, and earlier this month signed orders to ban the import of many alcoholic beverages from Canada, among other products.

The U.S. is the biggest export market for Irish whiskey. Roughly 5.5 million cases of the drink were sold in the U.S. in 2024-about one-third of all global Irish whiskey sales, according to the Irish Whiskey Association.

The group said in May that its exports to the U.S. are now valued at EUR450 million annually, equivalent to about $520 million .

The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about Trump's proposal to remove the tariff.
